Day 12. March 16
Palermo, Sicily, Italy.
The city has high unemployment levels, high corruption and a significant black market empire (Palermo being the home of the Sicilian Mafia). We were warned of pickpockets and handbag theft. From the port we took a shuttle to nearby Monreale six miles away. Monreale is on the slope of Monte Caputo, overlooking the very fertile valley called "La Conca d'oro" (the Golden Shell), famed for its orange, olive and almond trees, the produce of which is exported in large quantities.
