Herculaneum
We had a short amount of time left over from Pompeii and not yet due to the cruise ship so we also visited nearby Herculean. The train stop is spelled Ercolano Scavi (ruins). Get off here. Not at Ercolano. The ruins are eight blocks downhill. Unless disabled don't bother with a taxi or bus. I took these photos from high above which distorts their size. This community was covered in 65 feet of ash during the Mt. Vesuvius eruption. It is assumed Herculaneum was named after the mythical and virile hero Hercules. Romans adapted the Greek divine hero under these names: Heracles/Hercle/Alcides/Hercules, who was the son of Zeus, into their own mythology. Hercules had contradictory characteristics and was worshipped in the area and famous for his wisdom, great soul, strength and far-ranging adventures.
Back on board and ready to sail
